Media Release – Trinidad and Tobago’s giants are back: 2026 Leatherback Turtle nesting season begins

Leatherback turtles, along with all sea turtle species in Trinidad and Tobago, are legally recognised as Environmentally Sensitive Species (ESS). Recent declines in nesting numbers at key beaches illustrate why this protection is vital and underscore the urgent need for all hands-on deck to safeguard these endangered creatures for future generations.

According to Neeala Mongroo, Deputy Chairman of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), “When the leatherback turtles return to our shores each year, it is one of nature’s most powerful reminders that Trinidad and Tobago has been entrusted with protecting a global natural treasure. The Environmental Management Authority remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguard these magnificent creatures and ensure that this remarkable cycle of life continues for generations to come.”
