The EMA Protects Terrestrial Biodiversity

iybseptember.jpg

Trinidad's terrestrial biodiversity is of South American origin. Because of this, we have a higher species richness than many Caribbean islands, buta low number of species that are found only in our twin island state. Like marine life, terrestrial organisms are also sensitive to climatic changes such as global warming.

Did you know that changing climatic patterns, along with human activities, affect the flowering of plants and the migration patterns of animals? Our diverse landscape has more than just aesthetic value. It also contributes to good air quality, fresh water and sustains our ecosystems and food chains. Our terrestrial diversity enhances our daily lives in many ways. It is our responsibility to ensure that while they serve us, we strive to protect them as well.

Protecting the Pawi

The Trinidad Piping Guan or Pawi, Pipile pipile, is Trinidad's only endemic bird, i.e. found exclusively in Trinidad-nowhere else in the world. It is a black, turkey-like bird with a white face, black beak, brilliant blue wattles extending from its neck, and red legs. The Pawi is a gregarious, arboreal bird with a wingspan of up to 60 centimeters.

September 25 is Beach Clean-Up Day

Agencies involved in annual coastal cleanup activities associated with the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) campaign, led in Trinidad and Tobago by the Caribbean Network for Integrated Rural Development (CNIRD), are expressing concerns that debris collection data for the country continue to show upward trends.

The statistics on 2009 activities were released on Tuesday August 10, 2010 at the launch of 2010 ICC campaign which takes place at beaches and waterways nationwide on September 25th 2010.
